Remembering Dr. Andy Golden

We, at the SADS Foundation, are extremely saddened that we have lost one of our dearest family members. Andy Golden, PhD, passed away on July 1, 2023 and left a huge hole in our hearts.

Andy joined the SADS family in 2011 and immediately began volunteering to help us spread awareness about SADS conditions and the importance of CPR/AED training at his daughter’s school and in the community. He then began to attend family conferences whether they were international or local. After meeting so many other families, Andy established a local in-person support group for those who lived near him in Maryland and then planned local family seminars with the hospitals in the region.

Whenever he was at our conferences, Andy jumped in to help in whatever way possible and always with a smile and a great sense of humor. Andy made everyone he met feel special and comfortable around him. He was such a wonderful support and an amazing friend taking time to attend events of family volunteer fundraisers for the SADS Foundation, donating funds in honor of other families, and giving annual gifts to our organization.

Then, as the Timothy Syndrome (TS) families began to organize, Andy began to help with research on this condition and shared it with TS families at annual conferences. He became the first president of the Board of Trustees for the Timothy Syndrome Foundation in 2021 and continued his research as a Molecular Geneticist at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, who modeled TS in a microscopic nematode (worm). He recently generated a TS zebrafish model and collaborated with a number of scientists to look at the developmental defects in fish.

So, what can we say about Dr. Andy Golden? All of this and so much more. We have been honored and delighted to know this exceptional man and Andy will be deeply missed. 

Andy was a very special person in our SADS community. He was not only a passionate volunteer and a kind and loving friend, but also a brilliant scientist and researcher; he meant a lot to the staff and board at SADS, and we know he meant a lot to many of you in the community as well.
