About This Research Study

An ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) is a life-saving device — but receiving a shock from one can be a sudden, painful, and frightening experience. Many people who receive an ICD shock feel anxious, fearful, or unsure about returning to everyday activities. For some, these feelings can develop into a more serious condition called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The ICD Shock Self-Management Recovery Trial (ICD Shock SMART) is a research study led by Dr. Cynthia M. Dougherty at the University of Washington School of Nursing. The goal of this study is to learn more about what people experience after an ICD shock — and to test whether a short, supportive program can help reduce stress and anxiety, build confidence, and prevent PTSD.

Participants will be assigned to one of two groups. Both groups will answer questionnaires, wear a step counter, and provide small saliva and hair samples at four time points over 12 months. One group will also take part in a 4-week program that includes wearing a heart rate monitor (a Polar wrist watch) and completing four online stress management modules, with weekly check-in calls from a nurse. No trips to Seattle are required — everything is done by phone, mail, and the internet.
